History of Kansas City MO

 History of Kansas City MO

Kansas City was founded in the 1830s as a Missouri River port at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri rivers. The city was initially incorporated in 1838, when it was still part of Jackson County. In 1853, the city became the county seat of newly created Wyandotte County. During the Civil War, Kansas City was a major supply center for Union troops; it was also the destination for many African-American slaves who escaped from neighboring slave states. After the war, growth resumed and by 1890 Kansas City had become one of the largest cities west of the Mississippi River.

In 1897, construction began on a new city hall and municipal auditorium (now known as Bartle Hall), which were both completed in 1900. The city's population continued to grow rapidly in the early 20th century, and by 1930 it was the nation's fifth-largest city. The city's reputation as a wide-open town with easy access to alcohol, gambling, and prostitution made it a destination for jazz musicians from New York City and Chicago. Kansas City became known for its lively music scene and its role in the development of the style of jazz known as Kansas City jazz.

During World War II, Kansas City was again a major supply center; it was also the site of several military hospitals. After the war, the city's population declined sharply due to suburbanization and deindustrialization, although it has begun to rebound since the 1990s. Today, Kansas City is once again a major transportation hub, with a growing arts and entertainment scene. The city is also home to several major corporations, including Cerner, H&R Block, and Sprint.

The city's location at the confluence of two major rivers made it a natural choice for a transportation hub, and it soon became a major stop on both the overland Santa Fe Trail and the river-based steamboat trade. Growth was spurred by the presence of several military bases during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War.
